Key ideas
- Each square shows the ATOMIC NUMBER (how many protons the atom has), the SYMBOL, the NAME, and the ATOMIC MASS (how heavy one atom is).
- The atomic number is the element's fingerprint: 1 proton is always hydrogen, 6 protons is always carbon. Change the protons and you change the element!
- Rows are called PERIODS (1–7). Columns are called GROUPS (1–18). Elements in the same group behave alike, because they have the same number of outer electrons.
- Colour families: metals sit on the left, non-metals on the right, and the noble gases (far right column) are the loners: they hardly react with anything.
- The two rows floating below are the lanthanides and actinides. They belong in the gaps of rows 6 and 7, but the table would be too wide to print, so we pull them out!
