What your child will learn: Chemistry: Atoms & the Periodic Table
- Atoms have a nucleus of protons (+) and neutrons (0), orbited by electrons (−). The proton count (atomic number) defines the element.
- The periodic table is organized by atomic number; columns (groups) share behavior; group 18, the noble gases, barely react at all.
- Chemical bonds: ionic (electrons transferred, as in Na⁺Cl⁻, table salt) and covalent (electrons shared, as in H₂O).
- Chemical reactions rearrange atoms but never destroy them: mass is conserved. Equations must balance!
