What your child will learn: Vowel Teams & Syllables
- A vowel team is two vowels making one sound: ai (rain), ay (day), ee (tree), ea (sea), oa (boat), oo (book).
- You may hear "when two vowels go walking, the first does the talking": it often works, but there are lots of exceptions, so always check the word makes sense.
- R-controlled vowels are bossed about by the r: ar (star), or (fork), er (her), ir (bird), ur (turn).
- A syllable is a beat in a word, and every syllable has exactly one vowel sound.
- Clap the beats to split a long word: but•ter•fly is 3 claps, so it is 3 syllables.
