What your child will learn: Making Inferences: Read Between the Lines
- An inference = clues from the text + what you already know.
- If a character slams a door and won't talk, the author doesn't need to say 'she was angry': you infer it!
- Look for clues in actions, dialogue, and descriptions.
- Always ask: 'What is the author showing me without saying it?'

1. Who is the party probably for?
Answer: Whoever is arriving in the car (someone Dev is excited to surprise)
2. What event is about to happen? What clues tell you?
Answer: A surprise party: banner, balloons, people hiding, lights off
3. How many times had Dev checked the window?
Answer: Ten times in one hour
4. Who was hiding behind the couch?
Answer: His giggling cousins
5. What do you predict happens next?
Answer: The person walks in and everyone yells 'Surprise!'
